Naming

IceRPC

"IceRPC" is the name of the product and is a registered trademark of ZeroC. It is always written as one word with a capital "I" and a capital "RPC". However, there is also a protocol with the same name which is always written in lowercase as "icerpc".

Ice

"Ice" is the name of the product and is a trademark of ZeroC. It is always written as one word with a capital "I". Historically, Ice was an acronym for Internet Communications Engine, but we no longer use the full name. Similarly to IceRPC, there is also a protocol with the same name which is always written in lowercase as "ice".

Slice

"Slice" is the name of a computer language and serialization format and is a trademark of ZeroC. It is always written as one word with a capital "S". Historically, Slice was an acronym for Specification Language for Ice, but we no longer use the full name and Slice is now a standalone language.

Slice is also the name of a file extension and is always written in lowercase as .ice (e.g., MyFile.ice) for the original Slice language and .slice (e.g.,MyFile.slice) for the new version of Slice that launched alongside IceRPC.
