I don't know if this is acceptable -- you probably want to maintain compatibility with Java 1.4.2 -- but the included patch modifies slice2java so that it creates a true Java 1.5 "enum" instead of the string-array version it currently generates.

Ice 3.1.0, which will be released in the next few weeks, will include support for using Java 5 enums.
