The name ICE was taken for an Internet protocol in 1998. I came across it in an ACM paper dated 1999 which referred to "ICE Protocol Specification". It stands for Information and Content Exchange. It is XML-based. The spec was submitted to W3C in October 1998. For further details see
http://www.icestandard.org. I think this means that *this* ICE may not be able to be called ICE, which would be a shame, given the name of the company (ZeroC, the melting point of ice) and the names of the various components (IceStorm, Glacier etc).
If ZeroC's ICE ever becomes a standard then I think this could be an issue.
